Rome Walking Tour #4 - Further afield & things not to miss

This section contains a quick rundown of interesting and must see places which might be a bit too far to actually walk.  :-)

St. Peter's Basilica - Vatican City - Vatican Museums

 St Peters Rome  st-peters-inside

This is a fairly obvious choice but a little hard to get to :-

  • 62 Bus - To St Peters - goes from north of Repubblica, through the center of Rome in a long sideways S shape - Via del Tritone, Via del Corso, Piazza Venezia (north end), Vittorio Emanuelle II, across to river and takes you right to the front of the spot where the shot on the top left is taken.
  • Metro Line A - to Ottaviano - San Pietro.  This drops you about 10 blocks north of the colonnade, walk straight down Via di Porta Angelica.  Map
  • Metro Line A - to Cipro if you are going to the Vatican Museum, stop is about 3 blocks west and 2 bocks north of the museum entrance.   Map

  • Chiesa di Santa Maria della Concezione - Bones

Basilica of St. John Lateran - Basilica di San Giovanni in Laterano

On the south eastern edge of the city, where the Pope lived prior to 1300.

San Giovanni  San-Giovanni

  • Metro A - to S. Giovanni  or  Bus 850 / 117 from central Rome
  • Amazing church and a lot less crowded than St Peter's
  • Scala Sancta or Holy Stairs, from the home of Pontius Pilate, are across the road

Pyramid of C Cestius & Protestant Cemetery

Take the A Metro to Piramide and you'll find this greeting you when you get outside.

Protestant Cemetery

Burial place of Shelley, Keats & Goethe's son.   Go to Piramide station mentioned above, walk to the right of the pyramid and around the block to the left and you end up here.

keats grave  pyramid-c-cestus rome

and yes, they built the Pyramid into the cemitary walls.

Via Appia - Ancient Roman Road & Christian Catacombs

They knew how to build the roads straight back in those days - the 2nd photos is on max zoom and as far as can been seen it's dead straight. (orginally something like 132 miles)

 Via-Appia  Via Appia

  • Take the 118 Bus or bike ride

Christian Catacombs

  •  Take the 118 Bus or bike ride
  • Catacombe di San Callisto

Cavour Station & Steps

There is a set of steps on the east side of the intersection of Via Cavour & Via Giovanni Lanza, take those to a small laneway behind the church.

San Pietro in Vincoli - St Peter in Chains

  • Michelangelo's statue of Moses (completed 1515)
  • Reliquary containing the chains of St. Peter.

Domus Aurea - Nero's Golden Palace

After leaving the church head left towards the park rather than directly down to the Colosseum, the park is really nice and contains the ruins of Nero's Golden Palace the Domus Aurea.  If you go further left into the park you can go to the Baths of Trajan.

Colosseum

Going through the park you end up on a bit of a hill which I think gives you the best view of the Colosseum for long photos.
