Rome Central Train Station area to Colosseum

I recommend the Lonely Planet Map, small gatefold map or the Rough Guide Waterproof map.

There are a lot of budget hotels & hostels around the Termini area

Termini is where the express    train come to from Rome Fiumicino Airport, so you don't have to haul your bags very far & a lot of the inter city trains go here too.  There is also another major train stop, Roma Tiburtina, which is in the north east of the city, you can catch the B Subway to Termini from Tiburtina.

I have stayed at both.  Hotel Papa Germano is a basic 2 star hotel / hostel, Stargate Hostel is a reasonable hostel with private rooms.

One note about pricing in Italy.  The website will say €50 and you'll Email saying I'd like the room for 3 nights at €50.  Back you may get a response saying something like "we confirm your booking for 3 night @ €70".  You have to haggle.

If you stay at the Papa Germano and you walk out to the main street you will hit the Baths of Diocletian (Thermae Diocletiani / Terme di Diocleziano) and the Museo Nazionale Romano which houses the coin collection.

Walking tour is about 2.5km / 1.5mi end to end, I've walked this straight in about 1/2 an hour without stopping.  Taking 30 minutes at each church enroute and going via the Domus Aurea I would say Total Time about 3 hours.
